Description: The industrialist Evaristo Marni, envious of the success of a competitor, Andrea Vivanti, instigates a drunkard, Tonio, to set fire to the factory of his rival. Andrea, who a few days earlier had taken out a considerable insurance policy to cover his factory for every event, is accused of arson and sentenced to life imprisonment. Andrea leaves behind him a little daughter, Lidia Vivanti, who Evaristo welcomes at his home to appease his bad conscience. Thirteen years later Andrea manages to escape from prison, and, under the guise of a homeless man, he returns to his hometown. Here he meets Tonio, and through him, he discovers the whole truth about the past events. Andrea wants to seek revenge on Evaristo, but seeing how Roberto, the only son of Evaristo, affectionately embraces his daughter Lidia, his anger subsides. Andrea renounces his desire for revenge and decides to leave. Meanwhile Tonio, believing that he was teased by his accomplice Evaristo, eager for revenge sets fire to the villa. Seeing the fire spread in the middle of the night, Andrea returns quickly to Evaristo’s villa. Here he finally meets his daughter Lidia who hasn't recognized him yet. Sge begs him to rescue the man she believes being her father. Eventually Andrea manages to save his rival, although Evaristo dies a few hours later, yet confessing his guilt.
