The international research project VICTOR-E - Visual Culture of Trauma, Obliteration and Reconstruction in Post-WW II Europe funded by HERA explores non-fiction films about the rebuilding of local, national and transnational communities across Europe in the period from 1945-1956. Researchers at the partner universities in Prague, Udine, Paris and Frankfurt look at and examine how audiovisual representations of public spaces – and particularly the documentation of war damage and of reconstruction efforts –, have shaped the politics, policies and polities of post-WW II Europe. During their research phase they went through hundreds of hours of films at over 30 archives.
On EFG, we are now presenting a selection of these films. The following topics are meant as first entry points into the collection. Click on any of the listed topics to see films connected to it. Further archives will contribute films over the coming months and new topics will be added. Researchers working on VICTOR-E have added project-relevant keywords to improve findability.
