Österreichisches Filmmuseum: Austria in Sound and Vision - The Years 1935 to 1937

>> View collection (Austria in Sound and Vision) was the first state-produced weekly newsreel series in Austria that ran from 1933 to 1938. Under the control of the short-lived Austrofascist state, the weekly newsreel became an important tool for propagating a carefully-honed image of “Austrianness” to the local cinema-goers. Almost 500 issues were released during the series' five year lifespan until the state newsreel was reorganized and renamed following the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany in 1938. Today only 70% of the series is known to survive. The Austrian Film Museum's collection comprises 264 individual issues with a total running time of 34 hours that cover the years 1935 to 1937 – from major events in world history (such as the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, the Spanish Civil War or the Hindenburg disaster to name just three) through to simple depictions of everyday life as well as weird and wonderful curiosities.
