The soldiers Richard and Karl set up a labour battalion in a field warehouse whilst being held in Russian captivity. In the solitary environment the only thing that keeps Richard going is the memory of his wife, Anna, and the hope for a brighter future. Karl increasingly identifies with Richard’s love and eventually flees from the camp in search of Anna. During the intense period of imprisonment, Karl has adopted Richard’s gestures and quirks so that he can perfectly mimic the role of Anna’s husband, whom she has believed to be dead for several years. Anna is torn between sympathy for the stranger and loyalty to her husband, but her initial wariness of Karl subsides to a deep affection as he becomes a part of her life so naturally. She shares her dilemma with other women who have been left alone, who are also caught between loyalty to their husbands and the desire for a new relationship. But Anna and Karl’s blossoming love hits the rocks when Richard returns unexpectedly to reclaim his wife... The Woman and the Stranger received the Golden Bear at the 35th Berlin International Film Festival, 1985, making it the only film in GDR film history to receive this accolade.
