Detailed description provided by the archive:
The film collection at the National library holds a rich and colorful (old films aren’t only black and white, or silent) variety of titles, topics and themes. Restoration and transferring of film is an on-going process, giving exciting glimpses of the motion pictures’ past. All the way back to the early 1900s, film photographers have captured historical happenings around Norway, both of minor and major sizes and values, creating historical documents of special events, showing royalties, celebrities, explorers, etc. - or simply mirroring everyday life and people. For the EFG project we have picked some handfuls of films representing the early days of cinema in Norway, to represent a small part of our huge collection. In addition to this we’ve chosen a series of commercial films for the EFG. Over the years, hundreds of commercials have been made in Norway, and since the early 1920s beloved and familiar national actors/actresses have participated in these films. However, the majority of the films included hail from the late 1950s, in glorious color. These commercials are enjoyable reflections of its present time, showing products and attitudes, language and gestures from the present in a most charming way.
